So you graduated high school, you read the biography of Billy Bob Thorton, and you are ready to move to L.A. to begin your life as a super star. You know it will take a few years, but deep down inside you feel like you have a little something extra that will land you a part in a film with your favorite director.

Reality Check
Becoming an actor is not impossible, however, it’s a little more difficult than most would expect. You may have been the most gifted actor in your high school, or in your college, but when you come to L.A. you are up against the most talented and beautiful people in the world…and there are a lot of them. Don’t be discouraged, just understand that even if you are at the top of your game in terms of talent, there is also a dramatic need to do something else besides thinking you are going to be the one person in the world that has good luck. (but you’re going to need that too!)

Understanding the Other Half of the Business
While there are literally hundreds of thousands of actors and actresses in L.A., the reality is most of them are sitting on their hands thinking they are going to be discovered. Each year, many people get discovered, however they have worked their asses off to position themselves to be discovered. Putting yourself in a position to be discovered is an exhaustive process, but it is just as important as your talent (you didn’t move to L.A. to work for free your whole life).

Like any business, you have to have a product. In your case, the product is your acting ability. While 50 percent of a business’ resources go toward developing and producing their product, the other 50 percent of a business’ resources go toward marketing the product. If nobody knows about the product, then nobody can buy the product. The same is true with your career; you are going to have to invest at least 50% of your time and capital to marketing your talent. Never forget that the entertainment industry is a business, and you must at all times market yourself accordingly.

You say this stuff is obvious, but the fact of the matter is that most people don’t budget much of their time to the “business” side even though it will account for 50% of an actor’s success (some people say more). Lucky for you, most people don’t become successful. There are many easier and rewarding careers in the world. If you are not committed to your acting career, then you might as well choose a different career instead of wasting your time. If you are going to invest your life away in the entertainment industry, you might as well take it seriously. So get to work!
