Today there are many people who have a dream of starting their own businesses, and many of these are women. For a number of these people the cost and expenses involved in beginning a business and getting it up and running has been a huge stumbling block from the very beginning. A business can be extremely profitable and rewarding, but without the necessary resources at the beginning, it can be a very challenging process.

If you are a woman and you are interested in starting an enterprise of your own the good news is that there are some government business grants are available to help you put your plans into action. You can qualify for these grants and be given the money that you need to make your dreams of owning your own business a reality. These funds are available and ready to be claimed and now you can be one of the lucky ones who is awarded one of these pots of gold to use for business related activities.

Business grants do not have to be paid back and you can use the funds from these resources to help you cover the expenses of any type of company that you are beginning. The money can be used for supplies, advertising, equipment, or even to pay your expenses, and those of any employees, at the very beginning of your business venture. The grants can provide you with the financial help needed to cover the extra bills that are being created while your business grows.

With people on the news throwing around words like “recession” and “financial crisis” some may think that the last thing you want to do right now is start a business. This is actually a great time for someone to start a business for several reasons.

First, tough times make tough companies. If you are in a struggling economy, you watch every penny that you pay out and take in. You want to get the most for your money, and that will lead you to make the best decisions for you and you company. There are many large companies that started and thrived during recessions (think of Disney in the 1930′s). One thing to be careful about is everyone else is doing that too, so make sure your business is in an industry that is still getting a share of the money people are spending.

Recessions also create a drive for entrepreneurs. When people lose jobs, they are more willing to go out on their own and start something themselves. In some industries, like specialty advertising, you sell to other startup businesses and established businesses that are being more careful with their advertising dollars and want something that is low cost, but high return. As a specialty advertising business owner you can offer small quantities with quick turn around, which is very attractive to prospective clients.

Whenever you set out to start a business, even if it is a small one, you always need at leas two things in place:

1. Your business plan
2. Startup Capital

Indeed, the business plan is essential because nothing will work if you do not know exactly each and every step you need to cover, in order to accurately connect a set of actions to a set of reactions or results. Therefore, the first thing you must invest into is in your know-how. To achieve this some people turn to franchises, while others start from scratch and learn the ropes of the business until they feel confident that they are in a position to effectively build and execute a business plan.

Needless to say that if you choose a franchise you must be well prepared to put a lot of money upfront in order to kick start your business. This option will somewhat help you skip the need for a learning curve, but it will not ensure that you will have a successful business.

If you have flirted with the idea of starting a small business, you probably have thought of things that involve a small investment and a small number of employees. However, as much as you will be keeping it small, most of the traditional small businesses will require you to put a few thousand dollars as startup capital and then you will have monthly expenses that will constantly threaten the return on your investment.

I do not know about you, but to me a few thousand dollars is money, maybe not a lot, but it is money that I would rather keep in my bank rather than risk losing on a failed entrepreneurial attempt, particularly if I have ways to start and run a business without the need to put that kind of money at stake.

On the other hand, the definition of small business usually is accompanied by a small profit potential, unless of course that business grows to be a big one, but then of course then you would no longer have a small business.

So, is it possible to make a lot of money with a truly small business?

Some people choose to start a small business because they do not have too much cash to fund their endeavor, or simply because they want to avoid the hassles of having a large company running (I personally hate the idea of having a big company).

The definition of small business can be constructed based on numbers (annual sales, number of employees, etc.), or based on subjective observation of a business size (size of your office, how many jets you have, etc.). It is up to you what a small business is. To me a small business is one that I can handle all by myself, but this is simply my own subjective view of the matter. However, the fact that you start small does not determine how big or small your business will become in terms of profits, but it is unquestionable that if you simply choose not to make money you will remain small regardless of the potential of your business.

How much your business grows is more a matter of the business model model you have chosen, rather than the amount of cash you put upfront to make it happen, and then of course how much will and effort you add to the mix in order to develop your business. Start small, and go big (not in size, but in profits), my kind of business. Sounds easy enough right? but is it really possible to start small and go big with your own small business?

Probably one of the must difficult things in life is to start your own business, and it remains so difficult because by definition a business involve an continuous exchange of wealth between individuals in a town, a city, a country or even the world.

The problem is how do you get someone else to give up part of that wealth in your favor?

You might think that the secret is having a great product because then everybody will want to have it and therefore they will happily pay you money for it.

This is certainly one of the ingredients of a good business, but the problem is: how do they know your product even exists? And if they do, how do they become aware that it is so great?

If you live in a small town and you intend to start a business that will sell goods or services to the locals, well you will need to set up a billboard, and pass out some fliers, and maybe go to the local newspaper for an ad.

The same applies if you want to go further and sell a product countrywide, you will have to let people know you exist. Bottom line, your business will be as good as your promotion and advertising efforts.
