Positioning is one of the most important factors to consider when setting up your satellite TV system. No matter how excellent your satellite TV system is, if you’ve chosen a poor site to install your satellite dish then all your efforts will simply come to nothing.

The Right Dish

Naturally, before you consider the ideal position for your satellite dish, you must make sure you’ve also purchased the best satellite dish for your system. There are several factors to consider when shopping for a satellite dish.

A larger dish receives stronger signals, but it has its own cons as well. For one thing, larger satellite dishes means you stand to lose more because bigger dishes are always more expensive than smaller ones. Naturally, a bigger dish would need bigger space for installation as well; the question is whether you have enough space for it. Wind disturbance is also a factor you should consider when installing a large dish.

Larger dishes often make use of C signal while smaller dishes make use of KU signal.

Dish Satellite Television is leaping above the pack in service, quality and options. My first satellite dish was a monster that engulfed about one-third of my backyard. It had to be aimed directly and precisely to the satellite I wanted to view and then it had to be fine tuned to get the best reception. This required a receiver unit, a tuner unit and a satellite positioning unit (plus another black box, if I wanted to watch certain channels). At the time, this was thought to be hi-tech stuff, and a person was actually proud that everyone for miles around could see the behemoth ten-foot satellite dish, it was a symbol of status. The truth is, that we lived on the side of a mountain in a somewhat remote location so if we wanted any kind of decent television to watch, this was our best option at the time. It sure beat continuously turning a rectangular antennae that we previously had mounted atop a thirty foot pole. The truth is, that I am happy to finally be rid of my huge eyesore and all the cables and equipment it took to operate it.

I work with property owners each day that have heard of these digital satellite TV headend systems and wonder what the benefits are, and whether or not their property would be a good candidate for a headend system. Here are some cliff notes to help you better understand what a headend system is and whether or not you can benefit from one on your property.

So what is a headend system you ask?

In short and “non-teckie” terms, a headend system is an equipment rack filled with active electronics capable of receiving, processing and delivering digital satellite TV signals to an entire community over coaxial cable and/ or fiber optic infrastructure. Headend systems are used by both franchised and non-franchised cable companies to provide video, Internet and telephone services to customers. Non-franchised cable companies known as Private Cable Operators (PCO’s) often utilize digital satellite TV headend systems to deliver satellite TV signals to private communities such as apartments and condominiums. Private satellite TV headend systems are a great solution for any property suffering from balcony dishes and/ or poor cable TV service from the local cable company.

The boss made you stick around longer than most nights but you were expecting it, so you set the DVR to record the season finale of your favorite show. Unfortunately, you don’t have satellite TV. You have cable TV and lightning hit the cable company’s transformer, so you won’t be able to watch your favorite show when you get home.

Construction mistakes, fiber optic cable ruptures, or utility repairs can wipe out cable service for hours at a time, over a large area of coverage. With satellite TV, none of these factors are an issue. When it comes to the weather, 99.96% of the time, the satellite dish with an unobstructed view of the southern sky will broadcast a clear, digital signal. This translates into a beautiful, high definition picture on your television, that is recorded onto your DVR when you set it for the season finale of your favorite show.

Many customers that make the switch to satellite TV have never gone back to cable. These consumers have found the service, entertainment and reliability they were not getting from their local cable companies. In their opinion, flat out — satellite TV beats cable, and there is no debate.

I still remember the day we got a satellite TV system – the same day we became very cool among family and friends! It was the 1980s and we were living in Bucharest, Romania. With this satellite TV we could watch MTV Europe, EuroNews, Rai Uno, C-Span and other Western channels. It meant soccer, news and music – a real treat in the hungry communist times of Eastern Europe when the only two TV channels available were broadcasted three hours a day. Having access to Western TV programming was unheard of! The satellite TV gave us the voice of the outside world; it created a sense of freedom.

How did we get a satellite system? At that time we couldn’t go to the store or call the local satellite provider as, the system was 100% home grown, built and installed by family and friends. The dish came from Deva, the LNB (basically a down converter) was shipped from England to my uncle in the U.S. and then to us in Romania. By far the best part was the dish actuator controller, which we took from an electric train toy. Who would ever think? But the times made people creative with their resources. We were all starving for information, curious about the rest of the world and looking for ways to escape our sometime sad reality. We were lucky!

The issue of which to go with-cable or satellite TV-has driven wedges between good friends and probably even ruined a few marriages (I hope that’s an exaggeration, but you never know). It is a dispute that drags on and on as companies on either side of the battle entrench themselves deeper and deeper into their markets and sales practices. An amazing predicament, since, in the humble opinion of this contented consumer, satellite is clearly the way to go! Though cable has plenty of good things to offer, satellite simply offers more, and that’s the end of the story for me. So, here are a few reasons why I think the undecided consumer should come down on the side of satellite.

1) Programming options! There is simply no competing with satellite TV in this sense: you have to pay for cables priciest packages to get a portion of the channels that satellite providers include in their more economical packages. No contest.

2) More sports coverage! If you’re tired of only getting a limited and seemingly randomly put-together milieu of games on cable, then satellite has the answer. With features like the NFL Sunday Ticket, you can switch between the various feeds and watch the game you want. Ideal for people that have moved to a new city and miss their local team’s games.

HDTV or high definition television has been making quite a splash of late. It’s modern, it’s sleek, and it’s high quality. You can see everything in perfect clarity. It’s really of the future. However, how you actually get your fix is something of a quandary. For most people, it’s complicated; you’ll hear those who swear by satellite, while others love their cable. Or you could go with the old rabbit ears, and buy an economical HD antenna. And then there are new technologies to throw into the mix such as fiber based services. It’s rather confusing, especially if you’re not a gearhead who knows all the ins and outs of each technology.

Let’s start off with the antenna, aka terrestrial high def TV. Antennas are probably your cheapest option for getting a high definition signal. Many local networks broadcast a high def signal which are free to viewers; most newer sets include ATSC tuners which can pick up HD broadcasts and lower res digital broadcasts over the air. However, with an antenna, the programming you can receive is limited. While all of the major networks offer many of their shows in high def, news, daytime and reality programming are still broadcast with standard definition.
