The CompTIA A+ 2009 version is getting a makeover and receiving some added topics to measuring the skills and knowledge required of an entry-level PC support and service technician. The last revision of the CompTIA A+ exam requirements was back in 2006, and the new updated certification exam requirements definitely provides a clear pictures of what the job duties are for those looking to become CompTIA A+ professionals in our current IT industry. Since the requirements have changed for the certification exam, those looking to take the certification exam this year will have to undergo some A+ training so to get up to speed with the new skills and knowledge added to the enhanced exam.

To help complete the changes, CompTIA sent out surveys to assist in the exam development process and to define the content for the CompTIA A+ Essentials Exam. There were two surveys: one for the proposed “Essentials” exam requirements and the other for the proposed “Technician” exam requirements. Both of the surveys talked about the current draft of the exam requirements and asked for feedback on how important each topic was, and how often a borderline qualified candidate would perform each task. The surveys covered two of the four available CompTIA A+ exams: CompTIA A+ Essentials and CompTIA IT Technician. CompTIA A+ Essentials validates knowledge of basic computer hardware and operating systems. The CompTIA IT Technician exam is targeted for individuals who work or intend to work in a mobile or corporate technical environment with a high level of face-to-face client interaction. Individuals may participate in both surveys. Since the A+ certification exam will feature new knowledge requirements, some CompTIA A+ certification training would be very helpful learning the new requirements.

While the current certification requirement structure was a draft version that’s under construction, a few things stood out from the survey. The new draft was not really that much different from the existing major category domain structure, but there were a number of various new technologies listed, such as Blu-ray, SD cards, DDR3, TV tuner cards, and Bluetooth. Windows 2000, Windows XP and Windows Vista were also listed as components, as well as some of the latest Vista technologies. Some of the older networking technologies were dropped and the latest cabling standards were added, while cellular networking was mentioned often. The security section was updated to include encryption, authentication technologies, and updated biometric technologies. There were no online surveys offered to me for Remote Support Technician or Depot Technician, and there were no mentions of either of those designations.

Since nothing is really set in stone yet, there’s a lot of time between now and the introduction of the updated exam requirements list, but still familiarize yourself with some of the latest technologies so that you are ready when the new list does come out. Taking an A+ training course will definitely help you start thinking and learning about what you might encounter on the new requirements list, as well as teach you the basics that never change on the exam.

Taking an A+ Certification course will definitely help you understand the new competencies the 2009 certification exam measures, so that you can successfully pass the exam without any problems. With the right A+ Training program, you can easily become a certified professional in no time!

Getting your application approved to take the Project Management Professional Exam is just as important as studying for the exam! Taking the PMP isn’t like taking the SAT or ACT for college. The PMP Exam demands experience and professionalism prior to testing. The first step in applying to take the PMP Exam is to submit an initial application. On this form, you will have to list your experience as a project manager and list completed projects you’ve directed. If you only possess a high school degree, you must have 5 years experience as a project manager and 35 hours of project management training. If you possess a bachelor’s degree or higher, you only need 3 years experience as a project manager and 35 hours of project management training to qualify for certification.

Once you have compiled your relevant experience information (you have 90 days to complete this step) you submit your initial application with your payment. The professional auditors at the Project Management Institute then review your application and ensure all the details are complete. At this time they may contact your references as well to validate any professional experience. This initial review process takes 5 days.

If your application checks out okay, you may receive another level of auditing for your application. This is another 5 day process and involves an in-depth evaluation of your projects you’ve managed. Not all candidates go through this process. Auditing is a random method used by PMI to ensure they are maintaining a level of professionalism and expertise when they approve applications. After you have been approved as a legitimate project manager, you have 1 year to take the PMP Exam which completes the credential process.

Studying for the PMP Exam is similar to studying for any other college-level exam. A great studying method depends on your learning style. Many students find that if they read through the PMP material once, they can later re-attack the more challenging sections more easily. After you have studied the material and feel you have a fairly good grasp of project management theory, you should take a practice test. After you have taken a practice PMP Exam, identify which sections you need the most help studying. Go back through these sections and focus on them. Most adults find that 4-6 weeks of studying for 5-7 hours a week is sufficient to establish a passing score on the PMP Exam.

MCSE, which stands for Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer, was the gold standard for systems administration, design, security and networking certifications up until 2003. The certification is now being transitioned to different certifications, though the core requirements for these certifications remain the same and are still offered. MCSE courses have been renamed, but the basic elements of study remain largely the same.

MCSE certifications denote an individual as an expert on the architecture and operations of the Windows 2003 server environment. The certification is broken down into core and specialty certifications. The core requirements are achieved by passing four tests: Managing and Maintaining a Windows Server 2003 Environment; Implementing, Managing, and Maintaining a Windows Server 2003 Network Infrastructure; Planning and Maintaining a Windows Server 2003 Network Infrastructure; and Planning, Implementing, and Maintaining a Windows Server 2003 Active Directory Infrastructure. These four tests constitute the knowledge required to be an expert in the advanced configuration of this server operating system.

To complete the certification, several other tests were required that allowed an engineer to specialize their skills. Individuals seeking the certification could choose from one of the following three elective examinations to hone their client OS skills: TS: Windows Vista, Configuring; Installing, Configuring, and Administering Windows XP Professional; Installing, Configuring, and Administering Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional.

The design part of the certification was obtained by completing either the Designing a Windows Server 2003 Active Directory and Network Infrastructure exam or the Designing Security for a Windows Server 2003 Network exam. These core competencies are the foundation of the program.

From that point, there were numerous elective exams from which one could choose to finish their certification. The final elective exam covered the core requirements in more depth, testing individuals for competency in security, advanced architecture, Terminal Services and Microsoft Exchange Server. Individuals who carried the MCSE certification could, and still can, command very high prices for their time. Among computer technicians, they are generally considered to be some of the most qualified and competent individuals working in the field.

An MCSE Certification is still available and incredibly useful. The program is now being transitioned, however, into the MCITP certification. There are programs available that allow individuals with the MCSE certification to transition to the new certification, if they so choose, though an MCSE certification has lost none of its usefulness or clout and still denotes a very skilled technician.

The courses required to obtain an MCSE are widely available online and from training centers all over the country. The training centers are partnered with Microsoft and offer the coursework necessary to pass the various exams required to obtain the certification. These courses are advanced, and it’s generally recommended that an individual taking them have some background in technology before they embark on this advanced field of study. An A+ Certification, vocational training in computer networking or substantial on-the-job training is very helpful if one desires to take the MCSE classes. This certification is one of the best ways to increase one’s earning potential.

Preparation for the PMP or CAPM exam is similar to other certification exams in that it involves personal readiness, besides mastery related knowledge. Exam takers often measure their readiness based on their levels of confidence and other techniques. Let’s take a look at a particular framework that has worked well for those who have referred to it prior to taking certification tests like the PMP and CAPM.

Building Confidence
A student can build our confidence in mastery of the material in may ways, but I have narrowed it down to 3 key ways that seem to cover most situations:

1. Training and study should coincide with the learning styles that will best benefit you. For adults, this will likely involve studying from multiple sources that include a book or other printed material, lots of visuals, and perhaps some audio training such as podcasts. Most candidates will also want to either take classroom training, or interactive, reinforcing online training, where concepts are provided in a way that appeals to virtually all the senses, and is repeated over and over again.

2. Do lots of exam simulation questions to test knowledge and gain comfort with the exam format. There are many sources of these, and they can vary in quality, number, and breadth. Some are free, but the more comprehensive simulation exams cost something. The ability to run these simulations in learning mode is also very helpful.

3. Evaluate one’s “cognitive level”, or level of mastery, for the material. This relates to the level, or depth, of mastery of the subject material, such as the PMBOK, or Project Management Body of Knowledge.

This idea of “cognitive level”, or level of mastery, is the focus of the rest of this article.

Cognitive Levels of Understanding

In preparing for any certification exam, such as the PMP or CAPM, a useful evaluation framework for evaluating one’s own level of command of the subject is based on “Levels of Cognition” from “Bloom’s Taxonomy – Revised (2001)”.

Here are the 6 Levels of Cognition, together with some questions one can ask one’s self to evaluate readiness:

1. Knowledge Level
Can you recall or recognize terms, definitions, facts, ideas, materials, patterns, sequences, methods, principles, and so on?

2. Comprehension Level
Can you read and understand descriptions, communications, reports, tables, diagrams, directions, regulations, and so on?

3. Application Level
Do you know when and how to use ideas, procedures, methods, formulas, principles, theories, and so on?

4. Analysis Level
Can you break down information into its constituent parts?

Do you recognize relationships among the parts and how they are organized?

Can you identify sub level factors or salient data from a complex scenario?

5. Evaluation Level
Are you equipped to make judgments about the value of proposed ideas, solutions, and so on?
Can you prepare a proposal to specific criteria or standards?

6. Synthesis Level
Can you put together the parts or elements such as to reveal a pattern or structure not there before?

Can yo identify which data or information from a complex set are appropriate to examine further or from which supported conclusions can be drawn?

Students typically go through stages of study, starting with the first level, where a basic knowledge of the material is gained, and gradually progressing through the various levels, like building blocks, to the Synthesis Level. This “building block” approach entails going over and over the material multiple times, where a little more is learned each time, deepening the command of the material, and advancing gradually to the next level. One can only learn so much on each pass through the material, and with increased knowledge and depth of understanding, the mind is prepared for and receptive to newer and deeper insights into the material each time.

The PMP and CAPM exams are highly challenging, and the PMP exam is in part experience-based, requiring an integrated understanding of the material and its application and interrelationships. Overall, the PMBOK is not prescriptive but rather is a framework.

Microsoft now offers two current versions of the prestigious Microsoft Office Certification. They are the Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) and the Microsoft Certified Application Specialist (MCAS). The version of the certification, a person should pursue, depends on the version of Microsoft Office you use and wish to certify on. This article will focus on the Microsoft Office Specialist certification.

The Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) certification is for individuals who use and wish to certify on Microsoft Office 2003 products. There are seven possible MOS exams available. From the seven possible exams there are two possible titles, or designations, a person taking MOS exams can earn. The designations are Microsoft Office Specialist and / or Master Microsoft Office Specialist. The credential you earn depends on which of the seven exams you take and how many of the exams you take. The seven available exams are:

Word 2003 Core

Word 2003 Expert

Excel 2003 Core

Excel 2003 Expert

PowerPoint 2003 Core

Outlook 2003 Core

Access 2003 Core

If you take any one of the above exams you become a Microsoft Office Specialist in that product. So, if you pass the Microsoft Word 2003 Expert exam you will be mailed a certificate, from Microsoft, which says you are a Microsoft Office Specialist in Word 2003 Expert. If you take the Outlook Core exam you will be mailed a certificate that says you are a Microsoft Office Specialist in Outlook 2003 Core. After passing any one of the above exams you are certified as a “Microsoft Office Specialist” and you can at that time use the MOS designation after your name, as well as the MOS logo on business cards, resumes, etc.

When you pass four specific MOS exams you will earn the Master Microsoft Office Specialist certification / designation. The required exams for Master MOS status are:

Word 2003 Expert

Excel 2003 Expert

PowerPoint 2003 Core

Outlook 2003 Core or Access 2003 Core (you only need to pass 1 of the 2)

When you pass the above four required exams, Microsoft will mail you a certificate that says Master Microsoft Office Specialist. This certificate will also say which of the four required exams you passed. If you have decided this is the certification for you because you use Microsoft Office 2003 and want to validate your skills you should do the following steps.Step One is Training – Through training, you will learn the 2003 applications and the skills you will be tested on. When looking for training look for program that starts with the application basics and also covers the advanced topics also. The tests are difficult, so you want to make sure the training you choose is comprehensive and it covers the exam objectives. You should look for training that includes hands-on activities also. All Specialist exams are hands-on exams. When taking the tests, there are questions that appear on the bottom of the page. The application you are testing on will open on the top of the screen and you will have to “do” the necessary tasks to answer the questions. The exams are also timed. Each test is 50 minutes, so you want to be sure you are quick at doing each exam objective. Training that includes hands-on practice will help you learn and retain the information.

Step Two is Practice Exams - Several vendors sell Microsoft Office Specialist practice exams. These practice exams simulate the test environment. It allows you to become familiar with the types of questions they will ask you, the way the questions are worded, the expected responses, and it is a great way to refine your skills before taking the actual test.

Step Three is Real Exam- The exams are only administered through official Certiport Testing centers. You must go to a physical location to take the test. You can find a testing center online, through Certiports website, and then call the testing center to schedule and pay for the test. Beware, Microsoft does not offer there Office 2003 exams online. You must go to the physical testing center and pass the certification exam to become “certified.”

Good luck!

Since Cisco Certifications are always hot and the Cisco CCNA is the most popular from all, I decided to start a series of articles regarding important topics that you need to be prepared for passing the CCNA 640-802 composite exam. These topics will be also useful for people taking the two-exam option (ICND1 640-822 and ICND2 640-816).

The CCNA exam will test your ability to understand the Internet Layer of the TCP/IP model, and specifically you must be able to describe the components and structure of an IPv4 address, compare public and private addresses, differentiate between the classes of IP addresses, define the function of DHCP and DNS in IP addressing etc. So let’s see some important concepts below:

– Each internet network host (computer, router, server etc) has its own unique IP address to communicate with other hosts. It is like the unique postal address of our home. There are two versions of IP addresses available. IPv4 and IPv6. The IP version 4 type is the most common today but in the future the IP version 6 will dominate. IPv4 is a 32-bit address and IPv6 is 128-bit address.

– IP addresses can be assigned to hosts either manually or dynamically. Dynamic assignment uses the Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP).

– The purpose of DNS is so resolve domain names to IP addresses.

– An IPv4 address (32 bits) is broken into 4 sections with 8 bits each. Although the IP address is a binary number, we represent it into decimal notation.

– An IP address (IPv4) consists of the Network ID (leftmost or high-order bits) and the Host ID (rightmost or low-order bits). The subnet mask specifies what is the Network ID and what is the Host ID. For example an IP address 192.168.10.20 with subnet mask 255.255.255.0 specifies that the Network ID is 192.168.10 and the Host ID is 20. Also, an IP address 10.1.2.30 with subnet mask 255.255.0.0 specifies that the Network ID is 10.1 and the Host ID is 2.30. You get the point now.

– We have public and private IP addresses. Public addresses are always unique but private addresses can be reused in private LAN networks. The Private addresses are within the following ranges:

10.0.0.0 through 10.255.255.255

172.16.0.0 through 172.31.255.255

192.168.0.0 through 192.168.255.255

– As the number of networks grew, the IP addresses were broken into categories called classes to accommodate different sizes of networks. We have five classes of IP addresses. Class A, B, C, D, E.

– Any address that starts with a value between 1 and 126 in the first decimal octet is a Class A address. E.g 10.1.2.24 is a Class A address.

– Any address that starts with a value in the range of 128 to 191 in the first octet is a Class B address. E.g 172.16.1.27 is a Class B address.

– Any address that starts with a value in the range of 192 to 223 in the first octet, it is a Class C address. E.g 192.168.5.1 is a Class C address.

– An IP address that starts with a value in the range of 224 to 239 in the first octet is a Class D address. Class D address range is used for multicasting. E.g 224.0.0.1

– Any address that starts with a value between 240 to 255 is a Class E address. These addresses are reserved and not used anywhere.

Harris Andrea is a Cisco Certified Professional (CCNA, CCNP, CCSP) with more than 10 years experience in the networking field. He is currently employed as a senior network engineer in a leading ISP company.

Harris recommends the following CCNA Video Training package to pass your CCNA exam Guaranteed (You can watch also a Demo Video).

You may be following the trends in the Information Technology industry and the explosion in Internet usage. Advances in technology and consequent reduction in component prices have brought down the cost of computers, resulting in a tremendous increase in the proliferation of personal computers. It is not uncommon to find a home with more than one computer connected in a Local Area Network (LAN).

The number of computer buyers is increasing, but very few computer owners are tech-savvy, and once they run into problems with the functioning of their computer, they need a trained professional who can troubleshoot their PC.

You may have decided to follow a career as a computer technician by recognizing this need in the market. You may have either trained yourself or studied to become a computer technician. However, this is not enough. What you need to recognize is that the industry wants certified professionals to meet their requirements.

Certification ensures a certain level of expertise and a company can be secure in the knowledge that their problems are being taken care of by trained professionals. For you, professionally, certification means that you can command a higher salary in the market compared to an uncertified professional and have many more options available.

How can one obtain certification? There are online certification exams you could opt for – Brainbench is one such certifying agency. Many of these certifications can be viewed by an employer online but a hard copy of the certification would probably have to be paid for. Alternatively, you could go to professional bodies like CompTIA that award certifications to professionals. These are much valued in the industry and could give you the winning edge over your competitors in winning a contract or a project.

Before you go in for a certification exams, make sure your basic knowledge is in place – it might be better to revise your knowledge of:

- Computer hardware components

- BIOS, Power supplies, ports and expansion slots

- IDE, SCSI and Bus architectures

- Processor – Interrupts, memory

- Basics of PC Repair

- Display cards and other peripherals like printers

- Computer vendor-specific design features

Once you have these fundamentals in place, you are ready to take that certification exam!

The CCNA Certification Exam (640-802 CCNA) has evolved over time and it is no longer sufficient to just rely on one kind of CCNA study material (usually books) to prepare for the exam. I will outline several CCNA preparation materials which are essential if you wish to ace the exam through self-study.

1. CCNA Books

I regard CCNA books as the must-have resource for CCNA exam preparation. The Sybex books (Todd Lammle) and the Cisco Press titles (exam preparation and self-study) are the most popular and authoritative. Ensure that you get a book that is up to date with the latest exam syllabus.

2. CCNA Lab Simulation or Lab Equipment

Given the amount of emphasis on the 2-3 CCNA simulation questions in the actual exam, it is important to get some hands-on experience in the configuration of Cisco IOS devices. If you’re lucky enough to get access to actual lab equipment, that would be ideal. However, for the typical CCNA candidate real equipment would not be an option. Thankfully there are a few cost effective CCNA simulators around which cover sufficient ground for the exam.

3. Practice Exams

Time management is extremely important during the CCNA exam. Typically you will have to answer 50-60 questions in a 90 minute period. This includes 2-3 simulation questions and several other time consuming questions. The best practice exams have a simulation engine to allow for you to get a feel for the real exam. Some of the good CCNA books also come included with a simulation engine and practice test questions.

4. Audio/Video CCNA Material (Optional)

Although I have marked this as optional, I have found that many CCNA candidates have very little time to study for the exam, due to other commitments. One extremely useful way I have found is to study during the long commute to work or school. There are now packages on the market which allow you to place the CCNA study material (in an audio and/or video form) on an iPod or other media device to study on the go. I have also found that it is much easier to absorb the material presented in an audio format, not to mention that it is very convenient to just skip back to the last chapter on an iPod.

Francis Teo blogs about CCNA exam preparation material at his blog
