Do you want to take advantage of the slow housing market to get a great price on your first or a bigger home? Are you trying to buy a new car – maybe one that gets better gas mileage than your SUV? Do you want to go back to school and need to borrow money? All of these sorts of things, and lots of others, often make people look into ways to clean up their credit report. And for good reason, too. The better your credit score is, the easier it is to get a loan, the less interest you will have to pay, and the overall better terms you will be able to get.

If you want to clean up your credit report, do you know how to go about doing it? Of course, the best and easiest way to have a great credit history is to pay all your bills on time, keep some outstanding debt, but only a little, and make all payments on time right from the very start. Not everyone has the life circumstances to be able to do that, however; that does not mean, though, that there is just no way to make your credit score shine.

If you want to clean up your credit report, you should take some time to look into the ways that credit scores are determined by the three major groups who provide them, and once you do that, you should look at your own personal financial situation and take the appropriate actions.

Would you be better off to close that account you only use in extreme emergencies? Would it be better to take a second job for a short time to increase your cash in hand? Should you use the money in your savings account to pay off your outstanding credit card debt? These are all the types of questions that you should get answered before you start to do things in an effort to clean up your credit report.

Growing credit card debt is one of the major problems in this country. Faced with bills that are out of control, many times people try to avoid paying off there debt. While in the short term, this may sound like a good idea; it should be avoided at all cost. Nothing will ruin your life more then un-paid bills. The following is a list of the unfortunate things that will happen if you refuse to pay your credit cards.

Late Fees

Anytime you pay a credit card late you will be charged late fees. These penalties are usually between $30-50. This in on top of the interest rate you are charged monthly.

Collection calls

This is perhaps the most annoying part of having a bill that’s overdue. Collectors could be calling your house several times a day, both at your home and work. They have also been known to use psychological techniques to force you to give money you don’t have. It’s important to understand that you do have certain rights. For more information concerning your rights take a look at the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.

Legal action

Although it is rare, credit card companies can garnish wages, or put a lien on your property.

Damage to your credit score

Perhaps one of the most long term effects is the damage to your credit score. Anytime you miss a payment, you credit rating will be effected in a negative way. This will make it more difficult to get a loan. Not only that but late payments can stay on your credit report for months if not years.

Don’t worry if you’re a victim of a poor credit score. Help is available. Make sure you read: Fixing Your Credit Score today.

It is not uncommon for life to throw us a curve ball sometimes. Such as a sickness in the family, getting laid off from a job, or simply not being able to make ends meet.

This often results in falling behind on bills, and that will cause creditors to create negative marks on your report. There is a lot of information that says these negative marks must remain on your credit for seven long years.

This is false. The truth is derogatory items can be removed and are removed every day.

To remove bad credit from your report you should dispute each item with the bureaus. This is done be sending a dispute letter in which you provide a reason why the item is wrong such as; not my account, account paid in full, item is out of date, information is wrong, etc.

Once received the bureaus will conduct an investigation. They will contact the lender and ask them to verify the account, the dates on the debt, and the total on the debt.

If it is not verified then it must be removed from your report. This is according to the Fair Credit Reporting Act a federal law.

This is the act that is cited when people claim an item must remain on your report for seven years. This act specifically and plainly says an item can remain on your report for a maximum of seven years, nowhere is anything said about the minimum amount of time a mark must stay.

Unfortunately this false information is leaving many feeling hopeless and frustrated paying the high cost of bad score. However you don’t just have to live with this, you can remove each and every derogatory item that is on your report.

The truth is every item can be erased.

You can write a dispute letter yourself or you can hire a service to dispute negative items on your behalf. Disputing negative items is legal and you will never face any monetary fines, jail time, or arrest.

The bureaus have financed a large public relations campaign to get this false belief to consumers. This is because the bureaus spend potential profits every time they investigate a dispute.

If you dispute these marks yourself be prepared for the bureaus to use stall tactics. Often they will respond to your letter by asking for more information.

This isn’t because they need the information but it is used as a stall tactic. This is often when individuals give up on repairing their credit and decide to just live with a low score.

Don’t just live with the high cost. You can dispute and erase any mark from your report. This will help to provide you and your family with the quality of life that you deserve.

If you are trying to figure out how to improve your credit score, one alternative is to close credit card accounts. Many people have not just Visa, MasterCard and Discover cards, but also retail and online store cards, gas cards, and cards issued by just about any merchant you can think of. Creditors look at how much credit you have available and how much you’ve used, as well as other factors like your payment history, employment, and income.

The first thing you should do is consolidate your credit cards to reduce the number of cards you have available to you. Having fewer cards helps your credit score. Talk with your bank to find out if they will close an account pending payoff of the balance, and then work to pay down the debt. Pay down the cards with the highest interest rate first, while continuing to make payments on all your accounts.

Next, you’ll want to work on paying down the balances of the other cards you have. Credit scores are impacted not just by number of cards, but also how close you are the credit limit on those cards. Even if you pay on time, having maxed-out cards can lower your score. Start paying down those debts by adding a little extra to your monthly payment.

When you pay extra beyond the minimum monthly payment, you are helping to reduce the principle balance on which interest is calculated. So, you lower the total amount you owe interest on, as well as improve your credit score. It’s a win win situation for you.

What if you don’t have any extra? It’s nearly always possible to squeeze a little extra out of your monthly budget. Think about the spending that you do completely unconsciously: picking up the impulse items when shopping at the supermarket, monthly subscriptions to magazines and newspapers, gourmet coffee spending. This extra $25-50 per month can go toward paying off your credit, and eventually, be added to your wealth building.

If you don’t have anyplace to cut, or even if you do, you can also find small, part time ways to make money and add that income to the payoff plan. For example, you can find many ways to make money online through eBay, Amazon Marketplace, or other online vendors where you can sell extra things of your own, or sell their products to others for a commission payment. It is possible to bring in a few hundred extra a month with not a lot of additional effort and literally no upfront investment. Put all extra income from a business or second job directly toward your debt amount. It’s tempting to think that since you are working that second job, even if it’s online, that you deserve to treat yourself.

By following these steps, and getting rid of your credit card debt, you can start to improve your credit score, but most importantly, you’ll be building a stronger financial future by paying down debt and starting to save more for your future.

With the state of the economy, many people are lead to believe that there is no way they can get cheap loans, especially if they have a bad credit score. If you have a terrible FICO score then you are generally not going to be able to find a bank or lender that is going to cut you a break on the interest rate. This means the more your monthly payments are going to be and the higher the amount you are ultimately paying for something.

The good news is even with an economy in a little trouble, you can still secure loans with low interest rates if you have a good FICO credit score to back you up. If you already have bad credit — simply because of young age, lack of knowledge, or a circumstance completely out of your control — there is a way to fix it all. And one of the easiest ways to do this is to clean up your credit report.

There are ways that you can use to clean up your credit report. You may not be able to make it completely perfect right away but you can surely improve it enough that you will be able to get a car loan or a mortgage with the lowest possible rate. Here are the steps:

1. The first thing you will want to do is pull your credit report. Everyone is entitled to a free report from each one of the credit reporting agencies each and every year. Look for any and all discrepancies that could be affecting your current score. Fraud, unfair reporting, and simple mistakes happen all of the time and they can be fixed. Having such problems fixed could greatly increase your overall credit score.

2. You will want to look at the debt you do rightfully have. Sometimes having too many open credit cards will affect your credit score even if they are not all maxed out. If you have more then two credit cards open you need to figure out which ones would be the most valuable to you in the event of an emergency and work on closing out the others. Once you have closed the unwanted accounts your credit report will start to shape up.

3. Have you exceeded your limit on some credit cards? If so it may be worth looking into tapping into your savings or taking up a second or part time job in order to get yourself out of debt.

When trying to obtain a loan from a bank or another type of lender, the number of inquiries shown on your credit report can make a tremendous difference in your interest rates or even whether or not you can get approved. But you might not realize just how much inquiries can alter the way lenders perceive your credit. And with inquiry removal and credit repair services being so easily accessible today, there’s no reason to allow too many inquiries, particularly those not authorized by you, to damage your credit potential.

Each time you apply for a loan, the creditor will check your credit history. This results in a credit inquiry on your file. Even if you respond to a credit offer in the mail or apply for a credit card or loan online, your credit will be checked, thus, creating another inquiry. When you apply for multiple loans within a short period of time, there will be multiple inquiries showing on your credit report all at once. These inquiries can lower your credit score drastically if you’re not careful about with whom and how often you apply for credit.

How Lenders View Credit Inquiries

When lenders pull up your credit report, they are basically examining four areas of your credit: the amount you owe currently to other lenders, how you’ve paid lenders in the past, the number of judgments, charge-offs, liens or other negative items, and how many recent inquiries have been made to your credit. Inquiries can show as hard or soft inquiries. Hard inquiries are those made by creditors with whom you’ve applied for a new loan. Soft inquiries come from companies offering credit card deals with whom you did not apply, potential employers, utility companies, landlords, or those with whom you already have a loan.

It’s the hard inquiries that harm your credit score and may cause a lender to be wary of approving your loan. Lenders view too many credit inquiries as an attempt by the borrower to obtain more credit than he/she can handle. It indicates that a borrower is “credit hungry” and may possibly be in financial trouble. If a lender suspects that you are in dire financial trouble, the lender may shy away from lending to you.

Lenders consider too many inquiries as an indication that your debt-to-income ratio is much higher than you portrayed on your application. New inquiries could mean that you have just recently opened up new lines of credit or loans that do not yet appear on your credit report.

Waiting Period and Inquiry Removal

The normal time frame for an inquiry to stay on your credit report is two years. Lenders, however, may ignore inquiries that are six months old or better. You can wait two years for inquiries to drop off your report, or you can take measures to remove certain types of inquiries from your credit report. Credit inquiries that are legitimate will remain, but those that were not authorized by you can be removed by taking a series of steps. Thankfully, you don’t have to take this route on your own. There are inquiry removal and credit repair companies available online to help you do this.

A professional inquiry removal company can help you clean up unauthorized inquiries and may also help you reduce the number of soft inquiries. Removing unauthorized inquiries can boost your credit score by several points or more for each inquiry you remove.

Whether you need inquiry removal or credit repair for your business or personal credit, be sure to check with an online inquiry removal company to accomplish this with the least amount of difficulty.

Learning to build credit history is actually very simple. The key is to continually and proactively boost your credit score on a regular basis throughout your life once you know how.

Remember, mortgage and auto lenders are not the only sources interested in your credit history. Landlords, employers, even utility companies may also want to check your credit during the course of your life. So, making it a regular, consistent practice to build credit history over time has never been more important than it is today.

In this article, I am going to show you a few easy, time-tested ways to build credit you can use right now to start establishing or restoring a good credit history:

1. Get A Recent Copy Of Your Credit Report

By law, you can get a free copy of your credit file at annualcreditreport.com each year. Check each listing for accuracy. Start disputing any false or out-dated entries with the 3 credit reporting agencies (Experian, TransUnion, and Equifax). Most credit reports gather several errors over the years, so left unchecked your credit history will suffer. Start making cleaning up your report a consistent habit and your scores will improve considerably over time.

2. Add A Few Good Accounts

Adding checking and savings accounts from your local bank into the mix can help your outlook greatly. Although this step is commonly overlooked, lenders do take notice of well-managed accounts and see them as a sign of stability.

Start paying down your credit cards and keep their use below 30% of your limit each month. If you don’t have credit cards, apply for one. Unsecured with low interest rates if possible. If not, get a secured card. The key is to start using them conservatively and responsibly to show lenders your discipline.

3. Get A Small Installment Loan

Once you have well-managed revolving credit in place, consider getting an installment loan from your local bank such as a car loan or personal loan. You need to have a variety of forms of credit to build credit history and get good scores, so adding a manageable installment loan into the mix can help greatly.
