I am sure most of you here all know what Google is. If you don’t I am not sure what planet you have been living on for the last 10 years. Google’s search engine can be used to find all your favorite websites and it can be very useful finding things you want to learn more about or get more information about. Below are a list of 15 awesome tricks you can do with the Google search to get the answers and information you want!

1. Google Calculator
How this works is your type an equation into the search field and it will give you the result.  Example: 2*4 – 23*5 + 1000.  After you type this in and click search or enter it will give you the result.  You can do addition (+), subtraction (-), multiplication (*), division (/), to the power of (^), and square root of a number (sqrt).

2. Dictionary Definitions
You can get the definition of a word by typing “define:” followed by the word.  Example: define: canucks.  This will get you the definition of canucks.

3. Search for a specific title
Suppose you came across a website you thought was awesome but you forgot to bookmark the site and only remembered the title of it and wanted to find it again.  Well you can search by title with Google to hopefully find that website a bit more easily.  All you need to do is type “intitle: then the title”.  By doing this you will only get results of websites with that line in the title.

Q: I’ve got a question about internationalization: I have a multinational site with country-coded subdirectories and I’ve registered these as such in Webmasters’ tools, will this be exempt from duplicate content rules for a site spanning uk/us/aus ?
A (John Mueller): That’s generally ok. I would still make sure that the pages are obviously well-targeted for those audiences. It wouldn’t make sense to send users from specific areas to one general page. In that case, I would use a single page without geotargeting.

If I own two domains (example.com and example.net) and I only have content on one, how should I redirect traffic from the other site?

• Use a 301 redirect. This tells Google that your pages have been permanently moved, and is the best way to ensure that Google can crawl and index your site correctly.

I have [thousands/several/at least two] links to my site, but when I search on Google it says I have [zero/not that many] links. What gives?

• If you do a Google search using the link: operator (e.g. [link:www.example.com]), you will see a sampling of pages that link to your site. For a more complete list of pages that link to you, verify your site in Webmaster Tools and then click the Links tab to see the sites that link to you.

I don’t want Google to crawl my site. What should I do?

• You can set up a robots.txt file to control access and block Googlebot.

•  Note that if other people link to pages on your site, these URLs may still show up in our index, and your site may still appear in search results.
