Getting your application approved to take the Project Management Professional Exam is just as important as studying for the exam! Taking the PMP isn’t like taking the SAT or ACT for college. The PMP Exam demands experience and professionalism prior to testing. The first step in applying to take the PMP Exam is to submit an initial application. Not all candidates go through this process. Auditing is a random method used by PMI to ensure they are maintaining a level of professionalism and expertise when they approve applications. After you have been approved as a legitimate project manager, you have 1 year to take the PMP Exam which completes the credential process.

Studying for the PMP Exam is similar to studying for any other college-level exam. A great studying method depends on your learning style. Many students find that if they read through the PMP material once, they can later re-attack the more challenging sections more easily. After you have studied the material and feel you have a fairly good grasp of project management theory, you should take a practice test. After you have taken a practice PMP Exam, identify which sections you need the most help studying. Go back through these sections and focus on them. Most adults find that 4-6 weeks of studying for 5-7 hours a week is sufficient to establish a passing score on the PMP Exam.
