Biography

Jeffrey Dean Morgan was born April 22, 1966, in Seattle, Washington. Athletics were his first passion when he was growing up in Kirkland, and at Lake Washington High School, he excelled in basketball and went to college with the goal of turning pro. An injury sidelined his sports career for good, so he started a graphics design company while acting on the side. Roles in popular stage productions like West Side Story and Grease followed, as did an inevitable move to L.A.

Once settled in Los Angeles, Jeffrey Dean Morgan enjoyed his first taste of film work with a role in the forgettable 1991 thriller Uncaged. He continued to dabble in films, but more attention came from television thanks to guest roles on hits like Sliders, Walker, Texas Ranger and ER. Jeffrey Dean Morgan also landed a lead role as a scientist on the Emmy-nominated sci-fi series The Burning Zone, but the 1996 series was canceled after just one season.

Although he continued to land TV gigs on Enterprise, CSI, The O.C., and Tru Calling, Jeffrey Dean Morgan was also experiencing a career dry spell. It reached a breaking point when his manager let him go in 2005 after informing him that he wasn’t working enough. As luck would have it, Jeffrey Dean Morgan won a role as a demon-hunting father on Supernatural soon after, and it breathed new life into his career.

While working on Supernatural, Jeffrey Dean Morgan guest starred on Showtime’s Weeds as Judah Botwin, the deceased hubby of Mary-Louise Parker’s lead character. Further adding to his busy schedule was a recurring role as the heart transplant-seeking Denny Duquette on Grey’s Anatomy, a role that would endear him to female viewers and bring more attention to the story arc of Katherine Heigl’s Izzie Stevens. Jeffrey Dean Morgan initially departed Grey’s Anatomy in 2006, but would emerge as an occasional guest star in subsequent years.

Since pulling off his television hat trick, Jeffrey Dean Morgan has put most of his energy into films. In 2007, he played a charming Irish musician who helped Hilary Swank ease her pain and rediscover romance in P.S. I Love You. He followed it up with another female-friendly movie, The Accidental Husband (2008), costarring Uma Thurman and Colin Firth.

For 2009, Jeffrey Dean Morgan has set up what is bound to be a career-defining year. First off, he will appear in the superhero flick Watchmen, playing a vigilante known as The Comedian. It was a challenging role for the actor, as a key scene between him and costar Carla Gugino left him emotionally drained for days afterward. Jeffrey Dean Morgan will also be seen in All Good Things, a thriller featuring Kirsten Dunst and Ryan Gosling, the 1960s-set Taking Woodstock with Liev Schreiber and Kelli Garner, and the mystery Shanghai alongside John Cusack, Franka Potente and Chow Yun-Fat.
